Emerging Wi-Fi 7 Technology Promises True Wireline Ethernet Replacement

Taiwan based MediaTek is currently showcasing two Wi-Fi 7 demos to key customers and industry partners to demonstrate the technology’s super-fast speeds and low latency transmission. Wi-Fi 7 delivers 2.4 times more speed than current Wi-Fi 6 technology. Wi-Fi 7 could provide speeds of more than 30 gigabits per second (Gbps) and close to 40Gbps, compared to 9.6Gbps of Wi-Fi 6.

According to the company, the higher speeds of Wi-Fi 7 mark the first time that the wireless technology can truly replace wireline Ethernet, making it suitable for supporting high-bandwidth applications throughout the home, office and industrial networks, while providing seamless connectivity for everything from immersive multi-player AR/VR applications to cloud gaming and 4K calls to 8K streaming and beyond.

Among the mechanisms MediaTek uses to achieve impressive performance gains for Wi-Fi 7 is multi-link operation (MLO) technology that aggregates multiple channels on different frequency bands while allowing network traffic to still flow seamlessly even if there is interference or congestion on the bands. This capability will play a critical role in delivering faster and more reliable video streaming, gaming and anything else that requires constant, sustained and real-time throughput.

These and other advances will make Wi-Fi 7 very attractive for devices including smartphones, PCs, consumer devices and vertical applications in industries like retail and industrial. There will be a vast improvement in the ability to interact during conference and collaboration sessions, especially in education and telemedicine.

For developers, Wi-Fi 7 is coming just in time… The technology will kick-off a new round of innovation in Website development and social media participation based on video.

Companies have been using video marketing for increasing traffic to their websites, generating new sales leads, and for stimulating more sales. According to Wyzowl, a company specializing in explainer videos, 86% of businesses already use video as a marketing tool and 92% of marketers value video as an important part of their marketing strategy. Wyzowl has also found that 66% of consumers prefer watching a video to reading about a product.

Wi-Fi 7 will enable marketers to show more and say more using increasingly creative video content that will be delivered to audiences more smoothly than ever before and with greater quality.

Certified Wi-Fi 7 routers and other products are expected to hit the market in 2024.
